Notes from the Field: Spring 2025
An interactive guide to exploring and shaping our city for young people, their families and residents of all ages. Our Working Group has been meeting the past month to collectively write the first chapter draft for Land Use!
Teachers needed!
Are you a middle-school educator in or out-of-school? Know one? We are looking for teachers (especially in Richmond Public Schools) to provide feedback on the project so far! If you have teaching experience in social studies/history or youth education in general please join our visioning group Tuesday April 22nd from 5-7pm. A nourishing dinner from a local establishment will be provided, children welcome.
Sign up for the Educator Focus Group by 4/18!
VCU Wilder School Partnership:
For the past year, we've also been fortunate to work with Chante Holt, a graduate student in VCU's Wilder School, who's created a Professional Plan for the Richmond Handbook. You can hear her research at the Wilder School Plan-Off! on May 2nd, 3-6pm.
Cannon Creek Engagement
We partnered with GroundworkRVA and Cohort LLC to learn from the community about the place that Cannon Creek Greenway has in the community and the future residents would like to imagine for its place in Highland Park. On March 31st we hosted an in-person engagement event at Six Points Innovation Center (6PIC) to learn more about Cannon Creek Greenway (also known as 'the bottom' or 'The Armory' by legacy neighbors), what it was in the past, what it is right now, and what neighbors dream it could be? GroundworkRVA's youth green team led door to door engagement to hear what residents had to say.
Intern Announcement
Please welcome our Spring Semester intern! Euodia is in her final year of studies and an Interior Design major at VCUarts. She views design as a powerful tool for intimate service + expression and has found meaning in past experiences bridging gaps between design education and youth. She is super psyched to have joined the SFCD team and support such amazing endeavors this spring.
"Supporting Anya with the Richmond Handbook has been like peeking under a marshy rock; Learning so much by organizing the insightful perspectives & content written by land use professionals, educators, designers, and urban planners into an outline for the potential draft of the Handbook. My background in graphics has been useful towards creating engagement content for the Cannon Creek Greenway survey aimed at bringing the community together at 6PIC to share thoughts on their relationship with and changes they would like to see to their Cannon Creek." — Euodia
DesignRVA 2025 Announcement
We regret to inform you that our event is not happening this year due to funding and sponsorship changes that made it impossible for us to host the type of quality event our neighbors deserve and expect. We encourage past participants to join and attend the Capital Trees Earth Day Fair on April 27th!
